    The problem with NLP / neuro-linguistic programming

    The problem with NLP or neuro-linguistic programming is that it is considered by many as a fad or a pseudoscience. While at the same time being reviewed by so many others as the best set of techniques and technologies for communication with self and others that have ever been developed. 


    As much good press you will read about it out there you will read bad and with that comes doubt and scepticism. But that is good. That is healthy. Part of the problem is that it is so unregulated around the world that practically anyone can read a few books on the matter and claim to be a Master NLP Practitioner. Some of us, though have gone through 5-6 years of rigorous training, learning, testing and understanding. 

    Before I got up the courage to go to my first training class in NLP, I had spent the best part of 4 years reading about it. Not just NLP I did read about other things to it wasn’t some weird obsession. I had read so much about it that I had become somewhat fearful of it and what the trainers could possibly do to me or worse get me to do in one of their classes that I had booked myself on and cancelled courses many times before I finally bit the bullet. 

    When does the problem of its reputation stem from? I hear you silently ask. No I am not reading your mind, just yet. 

    In the late 70’s when this set of tools, technologies and techniques were being developed the scientific world was actually getting very excited about its possibilities. The anecdotal and qualifying properties of the reports of its success were coming through thick and fast, and it looked as though it was the next big thing in psychotherapy. Field tests and controlled lab tests were no doubt the next step in verifying and testing the findings. 

    The problem was that its developers didn’t want to take it into the lab and make it a study of academia but instead they wanted to take it out to everyone, take it to the masses, to make some real money off the back of what they had developed and no doubt make a name for themselves. And that is exactly what they did. It made them millionaires so who can blame them. 

    But this decision has meant that there has been, since then, very little in quantifiable studies carried out on NLP and its levels of success, or lack there of, for it to be scientifically verified as the behavioural and social science it really is. 

    Instead, it has spawned an industry of NLP trainers that are generally unregulated and are often selling themselves as self-help guru’s, coaches and therapists for all your ailments and dreams. 

  2. The NLP, meditation and mindfulness Elephants in the room

    If you have navigated your fingers and attention span this far in this series, which let's face it is not very far at all, no doubt you are scrutinising the contents to decide whether or not this is the blog is worthy of your precious time. You have this info for free on, and you are scanning to see if it is of use as your time is precious. No doubt if you have picked up this blog, found this app on your phone through some mistyped Google endeavour and you may well have come across NLP, meditation and mindfulness before. You have almost certainly have read the books or blogs, or you have watched a plethora of YouTube videos, and you are sick of all this new wave crap to the far reaches of your toothless wisdom. You are after all a sceptical insomniac? Let's face you are. Insomniacs by their very nature all seem to be, to me in my vast discussions with them on social media. I know I am, and I know most of the people that frequent this site and FaceBook group tend to be a little sceptical. Especially when it comes to some kind of new fad “cure” or some form of therapy that will help with their insomnia. One of the benefits of insomnia is that it gives you so much more time to research topics on the Googlesphere and time to think, so much thinking.

    Yep, I am pretty sure this is the case with you too. I might be wrong you may be one of the few that start off that open cranium, but at the very least you should be sceptical of me. After all, who the fuck am I? You don’t know me from Adam, or Eve, so why trust or believe anything I have to say? The simple answer is, don’t. Make your own decisions and become informed by testing things out. Do the research. If you truly put something to the test and make it your own, then it will either show itself as true and right for you or as the complete farce you thought it would be. Critical thinking and analysis is key in all of these decisions to follow one course of action of another. 

    The problem with writing a blog/app like this is that so much has been written before about insomnia, about meditation, about NLP and so on, so what new could I add. Why even bother? Seriously why? I mean is anyone even reading this damned thing? Is anyone coming to this site anymore? Jeez, people speak up if you are.

    Also, I think that if you have come across NLP, mindfulness and regular meditation, you probably have a bias towards or away from these things. You may have tried them and found that they are just the biggest waste of time and energy in the universe or they sit right with you as an insomniac, as a human being.

    So, let’s go through each one and look at what the issue could possibly be.
